| The big debate.
Is it better to be optimistic or pessimistic?
What do you all think? | |

| Well, being pessimistic has probably never helped anyone, but then inane optimism is unrealistic. Perhaps cautious optimism; adaptability and going with the ups and downs of life? I think that a pagan philosophy actually helps us accept and come to terms with those things that are painful, the wounds in our souls, the things that may never be - as there is a pattern in Nature of growth and decay and new life . The archetypes of gods and goddesses and their myths can also help us with our own lives. I think that our goals can be very different to the rest of society as witches and pagans - and that can make life tough!! Though of course the basic ones of love and warmth and sharing and shelter are there, whatever a person's philosophy or lack of (I believe anyway). A druid philosophy is that we should live as though we are on the eve of a great discovery and prepare to meet it as completely, intimately and as ardantly as we can! | |

| I'd go with pessimistic as that way, if things go bad you expected it and are prepared, and if they go well you are happily suprised. | |

| ahh but a true pessimist will never be happily suprised, they will be looking for the flaw, the reason in the future for that achievemrnt to fall apart. they knwo it will happen, nothing ever stays good for long. i know i've been there!!! oh and you know the old glass half full? half empty debate? for me if the glass is empty and your filling it up then its half full, but if the glass is full and you've drunk half of it then its half empty | |

| Optimism all the way, but not to the degree of stupidity: it's idiotic to see the light side where there isn't any, in my opinion... | |

| Personally I vote for neither. Each one gives a tainted version of reality which people use to hide from the truth of life. Things are what they are- any idea of good or bad is just a catagorisation that people like to use to make them feel better/ worse about their situation. The optimist will just sit back and think that 'it will all work out for the best' instead of excepting the situation and trying to improve it. On the other hand the pestimist will just assume that nothing they can do will make it better and not bother either. I'd go for realism, exceptance and action everytime. Of course this is all just my humble opinion and in no way an attack on how anyone chooses to see the world. I think that whatever people have to do to make there life easier is fine as long as they aren't doing it to deceive themselves as this is the worst betrayal of all- to lie to yourself...(end of rant) | |

HONEST! I would say this is someone who walks a balanced line between the two which I would call being realistic. This makes sense to me. I am a realist at heart.

| I agree with Solvo. (as I do increasingly these days...I think she's turning me evil) Both are bad.
The optimist will be dissapointed and the pessimist will never be satisfied - if anything IS found to be good, they will say it will not last.
I'd go for realism, and if things are going badly, perhaps adopt a slightly optimistic spin on realism to keep oneself going.
Of course it never really works like that, and in reality my optimism/pessimism level vary with my mood...dammit!

| It really does depends on my mood, Most of the time i would like to think i am an optimist, and i mean a die hard optimist who likes to live in my own faery world and make up cool things in my head! but then when im down i find it almost impossible to think of any good things and if they do crop into my mind i shun the little buggers like the teenage emo i am (Im not emo tomi! hehe). So yes its really mood based for me, I can be realistic some times but im really damned reluctant to it!!!!!!! Realism has to be forced out of me! xxxx | |
