Ok, Tomi said it was ok to infect you all with alittle southern culture, so here are the lyrics to a bluegrass song you might find interesting.

Bringing Mary home

I was driving down a lonely road on a dark and stormy night
When a little girl by the road side showed up in my head lights
I stopped and she got in the back and in a shaky tone
She said my name is Mary please won't you take me home
She must have been so frightened all alone there in the night
There was something strange about her cause her face was deathly white
She sat so pale and quiet there in the back seat all alone
I never will forget that night I took Mary home
I pulled into the driveway where she told me to go
Got out to help her from the car and opened up the door
But I just could not believe my eyes the back seat was bare
I looked all around the car but Mary wasn't there
A small light shown from the porch a woman opened up the door
I asked about the little girl that I was looking for
Then the lady gently smiled and brushed a tear away
She said it sure was nice of you to go out of your way
But thirteen years ago today in a wreck just down the road
Our darling Mary lost her life and we srill miss her so
So thank you for your trouble and the kindness you have shown
You're the thirteenth one who's been here bringing Mary home
You're the thirteenth one who's been here bringing Mary home

Good for you Amber, but Capricious here lives in the States so she is is not so familiar with the stories here in the UK. I thought it was a lovely song (I'd never heard of Bluegrass style before!!) and was a very touching story...thank you ever so much for sharing Caprichosa....

Caprichosa - many thanks for sharing the lyrics with us ... they are very moving. I was in the shop when you sent the link for the full song to Tomi and he played it - I have to confess that I had a tear in my eye!!

I think the words capture the essence of the situation perfectly.

Hehe yeah ive heard of bluegrass I really like it but its hard to play due to the technique and dont you have to tune your instruments differently??? I know of it because my boyfriend is an orcadian fiddle player and he does a lot with that type of thing and once was going to audience to play fiddle in a bluegrass band! xxx

PostSubject: The Minstrel Boy   Fri Jan 11, 2008 5:41 am

Check this out. Not mine - Irish Origin I think.

The minstrel boy to the war has gone
In the ranks of death you will find him;
His father' sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee",
One sword, at least thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said" No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
They shall never sound in slavery!"

Cool song at the end of Black Hawk Down, if you want the tune.

I like!

Joe Strummer (R.I.P.) & The Mescalaroes did the film version I believe... I havn't heard it, I just Wikipaedia'ed it, but my dad sometimes sings it to himself, and I have a couple Joe Strummer & The Mescalaroes albums, which I confess, am yet to listen to, it might be on there... Powerful lyrics.

Now I've heard it!!! I did have it after all!

Bloody nice song!

I found a version with the lyrics, but the guy singing sounds rather Las Vegas Casino(doesn't really fit the mood). I'll keep looking for a better version.
