Satyr is in the house

Hi, I'm from South Africa (I discovered your site via facebook). I'm married, a stay at home mom, with 3 kids, a daughter 26, a son 22 and a daughter 15 (only my son and youngest daughter live with us at the moment though.

I'm an eclectic witch and I'm into crystals, herbs, aromatherapy, dowsing, divination and cats, I love cats.

I am unfortunately the only one in my family who follows this path, although my eldest daughter has some psychic gifts (she hasn't really acknowledged them yet though).

Hmmmm, can't think of anything else off hand, but feel free to ask questions.

It looks like you are already settling in handsomely. Which Facebook page brought you to us? Just curious as I've posted the link on a couple of Pagan 'causes'.

Being Pagan in South Africa - I read an older post on Facebook about the perception of Pagans, particularly for Witches and Wiccans there. It sounded very dangerous to have these beliefs publically known, what are your experiences?

hehehe, I tend to make myself at home very easily, so if it gets to much, just tell me to 'stop it' Ummm, I can't remember the exactly FB page, I'd have to try and retrace my stepts to find out, but I should imagine it was some or other wiccan or pagan one.

With regard to being pagan/wiccan in South Africa, it is becoming easier and there are those that fight for our rights, but lots of us still don't feel comfortable being open about who and what we are. I think a large part of the problem is that 'muggles' tend to lump us together with satanism which they hate, so therefore they hate us. Its an ongoing battle but we are fighting all the time. There have been some favourable articles in various media so things are getting better. However, being a wife and mother with a family who don't share my path, I need to keep them in consideration.

I once wore my pentagram (thinking it would be more easily acceptable than my pentacle) when going to the shop with my youngest daughter. She heard someone say (I didn't hear or I would have said something) something about "Oh those satanists". I worry therefore that my path, if I come out the broom closet' will cause my family to be descriminated against or even hurt.

There are some of us who are open about being witches, but they do have problems because of it. A friend of mine almost lost her job because her christian bosses found out she was a witch. Luckily she fought back and got to keep her job, with some uncomfortableness though.

I am gradually peeping out the broom closet, but do so with caution.

its all very well lumping pagans with satanists, but as to what idea they have of satanists...

I get the impression that it can be very dangerous indeed. The post I read related to the fact that the word 'witch' was actually directly linked with evil, something to do with translation or very ingrained views of evil in African culture? I'm not sure.

I commend your bravery for following a path that is so misunderstood. As for satanism, well, that has obviously been misunderstood too but then again I think that is much the case in most parts of the world. Education will help but I imagine it will take much longer in certain parts of the world than others.

Anyway, I just wish to welcome you again. Welcoming people is always fun.

You are right. In the African culture, people who they consider witches (but not like pagan witches) are often killed. There does seem to be a distinction though between pagan witches and african witches, but one must always be wary. In African culture, their witches often deal in muti made with body parts and they kill or maim people to get those body parts. Unfortunately people are sometimes accused of being witches when they are not (Similar to the burning times I suppose).
