| This is the system I use for runic numerology - there are others, but this one sits better with me There are two basic types of numerology used in the runes. The first is the total number of runes in a sequence. For example the word ‘money’ has five letters and as five is used to denote general satisfaction and success, this is perfect. Runes can be combined to reduce the number to a more suitable one where required, and where a rune sequence needed additional runes for the effect required, symbols such as Thor’s Hammer (an upside-down T), the Sunwheel or the Shieldknot would be added to make up the difference. The second type is a repeated rune. This is seen very clearly in a Troll Rune sequence, where three Thurisaz runes are used to activate the sequence, followed by the actual curse runes to make up a total appropriate to the effect required. In this way both forms of numerology are used together to complete an inscription. One. A single rune is used to represent the basic power of that rune, or as a shorthand form of the runes’ name Two. Used to bind the runes to your service Three. To strengthen, empower, augment and activate a sequence. Also used as a minor invocation to the Gods Four. To cause irritation, annoyance, distress and discomfort Five. For general satisfaction and success Six. That which is unwelcome or causes hostility Seven. Sexual or relationship matters Eight. Completion and strength. Also a major invocation to the Gods Nine. Not commonly used, nine is an enhanced version of an eight-rune sequence. Ultimate completion and power. This is based on the work of Bernard King, author of The Elements of the Runes | |

| Fascinating post! Thank you. Some of the above appear to be for more than divination purposes. Are they also used in spellcasting and if so, how? | |

| Oh, this is for magic I generally make a charm or amulet combining a number of runes into one image - this is generally known as a bindrune. I've a page about them on my old website - http://wyrdwebs.bravehost.com/bindrune.html I'll have to get around to rewriting the site one of these days, it's been up since the early days of me being heathen. | |

| Oh no, you can continue reading! I'm so rusty you wouldn't believe it Want a charm, no worries but a reading? I'm really struggling. You use them quite differently when you're working magic instead of divination. Basically, you are telling them what they have to do, not the other way round! I'm sure I'll get back into it, but you are the better rune reader now. Has anyone ever used runes in a magical context? Besides me? | |

| Grim, I use them lots in magic!! Myself and LunarCraft (Forum Mother) design, carve and charge candles to be sold in her shop (The Willow Tree). Ones for attracting money, ones for increasing passion....it's amazing how they work actually, they're very complicated!! But I don't do much else apart from for protective reasons, etc.
Logmadr...
P.s. Grimnir, what does your name mean?!

| You'll have to send me pics of some of the runic work you do I'm always interested! Yes, those beard runes do look like pac-man characters but that may be because I did them quick in Paint... My online name, Grimnir. It means Hooded One or Masked One and is one of the many names of Odhinn. It is the name he used in the Grimnismál, one of the Poetic Eddas. | |

| Cheers for that, Mr. Tomi! I had a quick glance at the first few pages, looks cool. I'm either gunna scan it onto computer or copy it out so I can give the book back sooner, but I shall enjoy studying that. | |

| Don't worry how long you use it for, I don't need it anymore, but I need it back when you're finished: means a lot to me, obviously, even if it was a birthday present in December....and my birthday is in the beginning of June!! | |

| Runes for beginners? Well, I guess I could always direct you to this rather nifty site... http://wyrdwebs.bravehost.com/runes.html
It's my old rune site, and has quite a lot from divination to making your own set.
