Anyone got an interest in dreams? What makes them happen? Do they actually mean anything? Can they predict the future?

I've always been interested in trying to decipher dreams, but have never found a decent source of information. It seems whenever you get those "Dream Dictionaries" (or what-have-you) in the shops, they always seem to miss the mark completely . They don't have things like ''panther'' or ''puma'' - which I thought would be quite a common one - but they have things like ''pecanese dog'' (I mean, what the hell is that about?!) Do you know of any reliable sources or know anything about it yourself, because I would be interested in hearing about them?

I think the problem with the dream dictionaries is that symbols that occur in our subconcious like in dreams are too personal to mean the same thing to ten different people let alone the thusands who decipher thier dreams from books. Obviously there are some symbols that are relativley obvious, e.g dreaming of a plane to most people will mean travel, but perhaps there are other more personal feelings behind it which can get missed when you dont listen to your subconcious and rely on books

Many divination methods like runes or the tarot already have meanings attached to them, and your subconcious *insert personal belief here* picks them. Dreams to me come straght from the subconcious so the most reliable way to decipher what the symbols in them mean is to search your subconcious for them. Through meditation or some other method.

Although if you are really stuck i think this is a good idea. Use your dream as well as another method of divination. Before using the tarot or runes or whatever, meditate on your dream, then see what you get in your spread. Often this will make your dream 'readable'

I unfortunatly rarely remember my dreams, but when i do i dislike using dream dictionaries because of the above reasons, i prefer to use my own perceptions of what the symbols in it mean.

I dream alot... many dreams are things that will deffinately not happen.. and some have and atmosphere or slight realism which depending on what choices you make, may or may not lead to that event...
take one for example, it was of me and mum visiting some restaraunt and meeting a friend. i decide to go off to the science lab right next door. at the time there is a bomb somewhere eles thata will blow in 40 something hours. the scientist in this particular lab is supposed to be working on a way to stop it. i take an interest in his findings, he 'hires' me, does tests, i get my right hand cut off, her replaces it with somehthing, i find out that he hadnt been doing anything about it, and is some crazy guy wanting to send me to the bomb and destroy it myself. i kill him by injecting him with the thing taht replaced my thumb...

or theres the dreams about me flying, trying to fly, running away from different sorts of crows, stickmen with spears in some aztec temple or a 2d grey moving scene of porrtsmouth or giant planets nearby and sun changing into strange colours ... those last ones are just annoying.

In my experience dreams are just the way in which your subconciuos mind dumps its rubbish. I don't think they have any great meaning, but the cause may be important. Figuring out what may have caused the dream might be a better option than trying to interpret it.

I had a dream once of me recesiving my GCSE results. (this was before I actually got them) and I looked at what I got the I woke up and wrote them down, one I couldn't remember. Then on results day I compared my real results with my "dreamt" results and the only one that wasn't right was the one I wasn't sure of. I believe that dreams do mean something and can be premonitionary.

When you dream do you dream in Colour?

When you dream do you have all senses , including taste and smell?

What if dreams are REAL? And the place you go to is as real as this one?

The results of the Photon-Interference experiments done by Scientists at Cerne(?) suggest that the "Multiverse" is real, so anything's possible.

Imagine a world where any belief you have is a living, breathing reality.

Wow. Dragons.

Bloody neat concept! I'd get lost in my dreams, too vast (and a little bit too scary - specially if I've eaten cheese). It's like when they say you can't feel pain in a dream, which is a bit false in my experience. What makes a dream so real when you're having one is the fact that your senses are alive, so who's to say...

Dreams don't come easily to me...I'm one of those people who always says "I don't dream", but that's not true: I just don't remember my drems most of the time, and I couldn't tell you if they were coloured or anything!! lol

Nice idea for a thread guys Banana

I always find I can never remember a dream (not completely anway) if it's pleasant, but if it's a nightmare it sticks in your head more. Do you remember nightmares, Tomi?

Waking dreams; every now and again I wake up and seem to still be dreaming a little even though I'm awake - not visuals though, more sound. This has lead to some odd things to wake up to:

VOICE 1: "It's one part gin and two parts tonic."
VOICE 2: "What about no parts gin and no parts tonic?"
VOICE 1: "?...That's an empty glass."
___________________________________________________

VOICE 1: "Someone could throw a razor-sharp hedgehog at me in my sleep!" Shocked

(Probably something to do with the plant-life I smoke... Rolling Eyes ... whoops!)

It's so strange when that happens! I remember when i thought you (VII) were sawing off my leg! Laughing
I blocked my dreams for a long time but i've started remembering them more recently. Still only occasionally but some at least. I think that dreams are a very important tool for our minds to deal with the events of your life. Whether you understand them consciously or not, they are still doing there job. I think people try to understand their dreams out of curiosity more than anything. Most dreams (excluding premonitions)are invented by your own brain so if you made them, you must already understand what they mean, right? Neutral
I deffinatly agree with your point out personal meaning Zephon. I've never really believed in the specific meaning of symbols in dreams. For example: being alone in the woods at night in a dream. To some this may bring thoughts of loneliness, isolation or fear. To another it may represent a connection with nature, freedom, self-contemplation or peace. Very different meaning and emotions can be concluded from the same dream. I think the only person that can accuratly evaluate your dreams is yourself.

I'm afraid the philosopher in me has to say this: What if this is all a dream? If you woke up and what you thought of now as real life was the dream, how would you interpret it? Smile

Has anyone ever had a conversation with someone awake when you yourself were awake?

Descartes scepticism raises its ugly head!! He once had a dream that he thought was reality, and came up with the idea that you can't possibly tell dreams and reality apart. It happened to me once where something happened, something quite trivial but I thought I had dreamed it.I had to write an essay at uni on this subject and my argument was that what I think of as reality has a continuity to it, things carry on from whats gone before, whereas when I think I am dreaming its got no continuity to it, its strange and random.
