I am fifty-something .... A mother with a grown son and I still keep secrets from my mother. She has a different way of thinking, I can't change that.... She is like your Mom, she believes a lot of things are 'evil. Evil or Very Mad

I know you keep your secrets, partly so she won't be disappointed in you, but also to spare her from being (needlessly) worried about you. This does not make you a bad person, I think this is a kindness ((( H U G ))) Plus + fewer lectures is a bonus. Modest

Thank you Evie, it means alot. I've been feeling really torn over what to do about the situation and it's good to know I'm not the only one that has this problem. Although I am keeping things from my mother as I know it will upset her, I can't help feeling bad about it. Also as i live with her and tell her everything else if i want to keep this a secret it would mean sneaking around and out-right lying to her and I don't think I can do it.

So how did peoples parents react when they told them about their practices and beliefs? My mother just found out about mine and I had a huge lecture about understanding what I was doing, and making sure I wasn't learning Satanism...

Technically speaking mine dont know the whole truth....mainly because i haven't fully sorted out my beliefs myself yet to tell them, lol!

Mum being the Catholic (using that term in the loosest possible way!She hasn't been to church in about 25 years!!) is naturally against it, but now she treats it as almost a joke, although she is proud that I have my Reiki Levels 1 + 2 qualifications...
It pays to have a Healer in the family apparantly...

Well, I have a job lined up with a local Reiki Healing Clinic when I'm 18 (can't get insured before then!) so I should be earning decent money...

Of course, that's if I don't move to America because of my college thing Razz

It was more boasting that the first ever potion I made in Spain actually worked!! Well!!

It was a potion to enhance understanding...and my Spanish improved tenfold!!

I understand how you feel. You are not being dishonest ... not really. Secretive is totally different from lying. You don't have to tell EVERYTHING ... to feel truthful. Privacy is a right we have. When you move out into your own place it will be easier to be 100% yourself... until then hun, I suspect you need to conform a little, after all this your Mothers home. You can have jars of herbs in your cupboard and safely and truthfully refer to these as "tea" Smile

When the time comes and you feel comfortable with sharing your ways and beliefs ... Please do not be attached to the outcome... You can't change her way of thinking... and vice versa....

Another thing, we don't have to wear on our sleeves that we are interested in or practise withcraft. We get to change our hats Witch

depending on the situation, environment, or type of gathering.

and I think you're right. It's just easier all round if I leave things as they are for now. Neutral

Also I want to make sure I'm not portraying my mum as some crazed dogmatic christian. I've always been brought up to choose my own beliefs, it's just that she was brought up to think this stuff was not neccessarily evil, but dangerous and in her own way she'd just trying to protect me (not that I need it Rolling Eyes

)

My mum is the same: she tried to discourage me a little at first because she believe I would lead myself straight to hell by practising Witchcraft or anything else Esoteric...

Now I think she realises that I don't even believe in Hell, let alone believe I'll end up there!

I do realise it, I just don't care! The sooner you realise that you will inevitably be alot like your parents the happier you will be. (obviously we're different in may ways too, hence the reason I started this post!)

Well said, Solvo ... Annie and I are getting more and more alike - last night, for example, we were thinking of the same words at exactly the same time ... without even consciously thinking about what we were doing!!!!

However, I do also respect Annie's individuality and completely encourage her to develop her own skills, thoughts, practices (within reason lol) and beliefs.
