Do you have any great shopping stories or memories you want to share? Smile

Many years ago we were visiting Gina's menotor in Surrey who was a world renowned expert in Japanese art. During the visit he showed Gina a special dictionary that he said was invaluable in his studies. It looks like it had been entirely hand-written - it allowed people to translate very old Japanese scripts, something Gina would need to learn to do. The problem is it was so rare that we had a better chance of winning the lottery.

We searched everywhere for this book (the internet wasn't so good those days), phoning, writing and faxing all the specialist dealers we could find, all over the world from the US to Japan, Europe to Australia, Holland to South East Asia, etc, etc. No joy. Sad

As a last ditch attempt, even though we'd phoned around London as well, we went there for a day trip around the specialist antiquarian bookshops. We went everywhere. Still no joy.

Finally, at the end of the day when shops were closing we ended up at a tiny shop opposite the British Museum. We went in and the shop owner shook his head when we asked the same question we had done all day. At the back of his shop was a curtained doorway and I asked him if there was anything there. He smiled and said it was their store room and we were welcome to brave it if we wanted to. The room did have bookshelves but they looked like they were going to fall over if it wasn't for the huge (approx 5-6 feet high) mountain of dishevelled books that filled the room itself. It was a mess. Gina looked so despondant by now. I just thumbed through a few books and while leaning over I knocked over a pile of books by one of the walls. I crouched down to pick them up and for some reason I glanced down the back of one of the old book cases. Wedged down the back was a book. I managed to get my hand down the back and gently pulled the small book out. It was covered in a thick layer of dust that was so old it was dark green. I blew the dust off, choked on the cloud of stuff (yuk) and gave the book a quick wipe and yes, you guessed it, it was the elusive dictionary that was only made by the hundreds back in the 1940s-50s!

Gina nearly fainted when she saw it. When the shop owner looked at it at the front of the shop he thumbed through it, looked up in the air doing some guess work on figures and said "That'll be eight pounds please?". What a bargain eh? Wink

We practically floated back home that day. Smile

Wow affraid - Stroke of luck there! (or perhaps fate...Smile)

Mine isn't exactly a shopping story, butit happened when I was shopping...*trails off lamely*

Anyhoo, I was walking down the high street in Weston-Super-Mare, and was about to go into Woolworths to buy more chocolate than I could reasonably carry (for xmas prezzies for people - not for me. Well, not ALL for me anyway) and I saw inside as I approached the doors the best-looking guy...ever! I stopped to put something in the bin in the middle of the highst (A sweet-wrapper or something) and I saw two little old ladies approach the door. It was one of those automatic ones that swings open at the very last second instead of sliding across whenever a pigeon moves several metres from the door. The little old lady types walked towards the door andstopped abruptly as it failed to open straight away. A few people stared because the doors had openned the second they stopped so if they had kept walking they would have got through without it being even slightly close.

I started walking towards the door myself and realised that the fortunately formed guy inside was looking at me through the glass front on the shop. I decided to make a slightly smoother entrance than the pair infront of me had done. So I walked confidently towrads the door, knowing there was no need to stop.

The door failed to open.

Completely.

And walked smack into the doors.

At least the guy inside thought it was funny.

Oh dear! If it makes you feel any better, I did the same thing when I was 16. I was leaving a restaurant and tried to look really suave and sophisticated because there was a girl who had made eye contact with me and was smiling, etc. I stood up, smiled at her, went to walk out of the restaurant and then 'BANG!', straight into the clear sheet glass next to the exit glass door.

I landed spread-eagled on my back looking VERY dazed! Laughing Laughing Laughing Embarassed

I did something similar to that: When I lived in Spain, I'd bought a new pair of lush sunglasses in the day time: they cost about twelve euros and I loved them. At about eleven years old, I didn't see anything wrong with wearing them out in the night time. I was walking along the Carihuela at about midnight with my family, and noticed an ice-cream parlour. We decided to go in, and I ran towards the front of the shop that was open to the street. Except it wasn't open to the street. The entrance was on the other side of the building. Yes, I ran into a sheet of glass. Dirty glass. With a black stripe on it. I though it was just a ribbon or something. I ran straight into it, and fell spread eagled on to the floor, dazed. I may have even cried. I don't remember much after that...I don't remember much anymore full stop!
